Rust

The Cor-Ten is on site. We wondered how long it would take to start rusting, and the answer is: one week :) This is the flat metal here that they will use to trim out the edges, but you can see that a portion that wasn't completely covered has already started rusting. It will eventually turn a much darker color, but we were surprised to see it turn so quickly.

They take the hibiscus out tomorrow :( Sad to see it go, but as you can see, it's really not doing very well. They will start work on the trellis that will replace it & the side gate this week too.

Still looking at the paint colors, no decision yet...

Maybe I am not clear on this, but why do you want something that will rust when your casa is by the ocean?
What if it rusts away to dust?

Ahhh, Cinn - good question. Cor-Ten is designed to rust to a point and then stop. The iron oxide in the rust actually creates a protective layer, so we don't have to worry about it rusting away to nothing.
